Tips for Winterizing Your RV

Winterization is the process by which an RV is prepared for winter storage. In addition to the normal steps that need to be taken in order to prepare a camper for long-term storage, the RV’s systems also need to be ready to withstand cold temperatures. A properly winterized RV will come out of storage in as good a condition as it was when it was put into storage. Interior

Start by removing all electronics, clothing, and perishable food from your RV. While mold and mildew don’t grow very fast in cold temperatures, you’ll still want to thoroughly clean all interior surfaces. Once you’re done with the interior, you can move on to your RV’s internal systems and exterior. 

Plumbing

When you’re ready to winterize your RV’s plumbing system, drain the hot water heater, fresh water tank, and holding tank. Don’t forget to open all of your faucets to remove any remaining water. If your hot water heater still has a bit of water left, use a non-toxic antifreeze to prevent damage. Properly winterizing your RV’s plumbing system is very important since cold temperatures can cause pipes to freeze, resulting in major damage. 

Exterior

You’ll also need to winterize your RV’s exterior. After closing all vents and windows to keep cold air out, thoroughly wash the camper’s exterior. You’ll need to retract and clean your awning as well. Once that’s done, lubricate any and all locks and hinges to prevent freezing. Apply your cover if you own one. If you don’t have a cover, consider investing in one. A good cover can really help protect your RV from environmental damage, both in and out of winter. 

Tires

Try to store your RV in a shaded area if possible. Days may be shorter during the winter, but long-term exposure to UV rays can still damage your RV’s tires. If you can’t find a shaded area, try using tire covers. It’s also important that you inflate your tires to the manufacturer-recommended pressure, as freezing temperatures will cause the air in your tires to contract. Finally, we recommend using leveling jacks to help prevent flats.
